Peer Pressure
At any one point during a student’s school and social life, he/she is bound to encounter people who have lifestyles and habits that differ from him/her. Unfortunately, some tend to be PRESSURED into doing something that they might not think is right. Why would this happen? In order to be similar to those around them, many teenagers will do something against their own will just to fit into the circle.
This is called peer pressure.
Peer pressure can be harmful towards someone’s life.
For example, all your friends have been putting on nail polish, dying their hair, and dressing in revealing styles. You feel left out because you’re not doing the same things as they are. However, you still don’t want to lose their friendship. What do you do? You just do the same, even if you know your parents will be angry.
That’s why it is important to choose the correct friends and not get pressured into doing something you don’t want to do. Your friend might tell you, “Come on, it’s a style! Everybody dyes their hair! Your parents are just not updated on today’s fashions!” What do you say? You can’t argue with them, as you risk losing their friendship, or they might even tease you just for being different. All you do is copy them: dye your hair, and await the wrath of your parents.
Choosing the right friends can decrease the amount of harmful peer pressure you feel in life. True friends will not force you to do something that will get you in trouble. They will understand and accept your differences.
Think twice before you do something. And remember: you don’t always have to follow the crowd; be different, be yourself!
