How To Deal With People That Have Low EQ
Do you know anyone that has a low Emotional Quotient? In fact, do you know what an Emotional Quotient is? Emotional Quotient, also known as EQ, tests your emotions whereas an Intelligence Quotient, also known as IQ, tests your knowledge. People who find it hard to sympathize with others are more likely to have a lower EQ than others. They tend to have a horrible temper, and they are extremely impatient.
It is extremely hard to reach out to someone that has a low EQ but, when you do so at the right time, it is rewarding.
I will give a personal example. My father has a low EQ. When I was young, he would constantly get angry, be impatient, and not understand how others felt. He slammed books on the desk, threw objects across the house and broke them. I did not enjoy living in that atmosphere. However, I learned the right way to deal with him after constant arguments.
1. Be patient. People with low EQ tend to not have a lot of patience. Instead, the best way to deal with them is by being patient with them. Let them finish speaking when they want to speak, as much as you may disagree with what they are saying. After they have cooled down, explain to them what you disagree with. The worst time to speak to anyone is when they have a temper. They do not listen to what you are saying at all.
2. Be understanding. Even when they are angry, nod and give them reassuring smiles to let them know that you are listening to their words. If you bypass the facial expressions, they might claim that you are ignoring them when you are actually carefully listening to them. Have eye-contact and make some actions to show them that you can hear them.
3. Be calm. As much as you may be boiling up, try to calm yourself down. You cannot control what others do, but you can control what you do. Do not argue back with them â when two objects are in contact, there is a clashing sound. But when there is only one object moving in the air, there is no clashing. If you do not argue back, they will not be able to keep on âchallengingâ? your ideas.
These three tips can make your life 100 times easier than it is right now. Understand that people with low EQ cannot have the same kind of sympathy that others might have, and just know when the time is ripe.
