Here are some simple pointers that can help you control those love handles.

• Skip butter or margarine on toast and in sandwiches.

• Add extra (low-fat) filling to a jacket potato such as sugar-reduced baked beans or sweet corn and peppers, instead of butter or margarine.

• Use lemon or low-fat yoghurt as a dressing on salad rather than salad cream or mayonnaise.

• Try to limit the number of ready-prepared dishes you eat - they are often a source of hidden fat - or look for low-fat versions.

• Non-dairy frozen desserts, such as sorbets, are a better choice than ice cream. You could also try freezing grapes and sliced banana for sweet, but healthy, snacks.

• If trying to lose weight don’t take appetite suppressants. They can be addictive and they mess up your system. Long-term sensible eating is a far better way to slim down and stay slim.

• Aerobic exercise boosts weight loss, burning up calories and toning your muscles.

If you are undereating rather than overeating, or eating unhealthily, seek expert advice in order to solve any underlying psychological problems you may be experiencing. Your family doctor will be able to refer you to a specialist.

The most important thing to bear in mind is not to become obsessed with food or body shape.
